1. General information
The main objective of this subject is for the student to acquire the necessary knowledge for the reading, comprehension and critical analysis of representative works of English literature from the Renaissance onwards, as well as to understand their relationship with the historical, cultural and ideological context of each period. Theoretical classes will be combined with practical activities dedicated to the commentary of literary texts in English.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030(https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/), so that the acquisition of the learning results of the subject will contribute to some extent to the achievement of Goals 4, 5, 10 and 17.
Minimum English level recommended: B1
2. Learning results
The student, in order to pass this subject, must demonstrate the following results:
1. Knowledge of English literature.
2. Knowledge of the great stages in the history of English literature and its relationship with Spanish literature.
3. Knowledge of the history, culture and civilization of the United Kingdom.
4. Knowledge of critical theories and methodologies of literary analysis.
5. Ability to transmit and explain knowledge.
6. Ability to identify topics of study and to evaluate their relevance within the framework of comparative literature.
7. Ability to locate, manage and synthesize bibliographic information.
8. Ability to use and take advantage of on-line resources.
9. Ability to analyse literary and audiovisual texts in English for historical and literary contextualization purposes.
3. Syllabus
1) Renaissance literature
1.1. Poetry. The English sonnet.
1.2. Theatre. Shakespeare and his work.
2) Romantic poetry and novels of the 19th century
2.1- The English Romantic movement. Literary and ideological characteristics. Representative poets.
2.2- The Victorian era. The rise of the novel and the main characteristics of the genre.
3) English literature in the 20th century
3.1- Modernism. Formal and thematic characteristics. The modernist novel.
3.2- Literary and ideological characteristics of Postmodernism. Literature at the end of the century.
The texts that will be analysed in each unit will be informed in advance.
4. Academic activities
1. -Guided activities.
1.a. Theoretical classes to:
- contextualize the literary production of each period.
- expose the characteristics of the most representative literary genres.
- describe the profile of relevant authors.
- introduce the selected works.
1.b. Practical classes: Sessions oriented to the analysis/commentary of texts and the presentation of concepts and approaches applicable to textual analysis.
2. Autonomous activities:
2.a. Study of topics, required readings, consultation of bibliography.
2.b. Practical tasks: reading exercises and analysis of literary texts.
3. Evaluation: Theoretical-practical written test
5. Assessment system
First call
Global test:
Students must take a written exam consisting of two parts:
1) Questions on the contents of the program (60%). The ability to correctly explain data on genres, authors and works, as well as to relate topics and develop personal analysis and interpretations in relation to the contents of the subject, both in its more theoretical part and in relation to the required readings, will be valued.
2) Text commentary (40%). The student's ability to understand and analyse literary texts will be assessed, as well as the proper use of the tools of text commentary. The text(s) in this part of the exam will come from the works covered in the subject and included as required readings.
Second call
Identical test to the one described above.
In all tests, the correctness of the English used by the student will be assessed, as well as their ability to develop and structure their answers in a clear manner.
